Structure & modifications

Linear pentapeptide. N-terminal Tyr is required for opioid receptor engagement.

Notes

Met-enkephalin is the endogenous opioid pentapeptide Tyr-Gly-Gly-Phe-Met, processed from proenkephalin (Hughes et al., 1975).

It is linear and unmodified. The N-terminal Tyr is essential for opioid-receptor engagement; the shared YGGF motif also appears in Leu-enkephalin.

Longer enkephalin-containing peptides exist in the same precursor; this record is strictly the free pentapeptide.
