Structure & modifications

Linear amphipathic helix with a proline kink at Pro14 and a basic C-terminal cassette.

Notes

Melittin is the principal 26-residue peptide of honeybee (Apis mellifera) venom: linear, C-terminally amidated, and strongly amphipathic.

A hydrophobic helical face and cationic cassette KRKRQQ-NH2 drive membrane association. Pro14 introduces the characteristic kink seen in crystal and membrane-bound structures.
