Structure & modifications

Cyclic via Cys3–Cys14. The Phe7-Trp8-Lys9-Thr10 β-turn is the pharmacophore exploited by octreotide and lanreotide.

Notes

Somatostatin-14 (SRIF-14) is the classic hypothalamic tetradecapeptide that inhibits GH release and many GI hormones. An N-terminally extended form, somatostatin-28, also occurs in vivo.

A disulfide Cys3–Cys14 closes a 12-residue ring. Inside that ring, the Phe7-Trp8-Lys9-Thr10 β-turn is the pharmacophore later compressed into octreotide and lanreotide.

Termini are unmodified on this free-peptide record. Length is 14 residues; the disulfide is a modification, not an extra residue.
